The light in the hallway: Why the „coup de grâce“ for animals is a lie
„When the light is on, please speak softly, someone is saying goodbye“.
When the light is on, please speak softly, someone is saying goodbye
The reactions beneath it are almost always identical: crying emojis, expressions of sympathy, and comments about how terrible it is to lose a beloved pet. It is a staging of grief that touches us deeply. But what is completely lost in all this is a radical, almost taboo question: What about the animal’s right to self-determination?
The Illusion of Choice
When we talk about death, we often draw comparisons to humans. A human has—at least theoretically—a choice. Someone terminally ill with cancer can decide: Do I wait until the disease takes me? Or do I choose to end my own life, jump off a bridge, or use other methods?
We do not give animals this choice. We call it „humane“ or „helpful,“ but in fact, animals are forced to ingest a toxin that kills them. We sell this act as being in the animal’s best interest. But is it really? Or is it just the most convenient solution for a system that only allows autonomy where it doesn’t cause an inconvenience?
A Farewell for the Bereaved, Not the Victim
Anyone reading the comments under such posts quickly realizes: it is often less about the animal and more about the well-being of the owners. The clinics do everything to make us feel good. Candles, soft voices, gentle words. It is a performance for the survivors.
Yet there could be another way. You could simply provide an animal with pain relief until it dies on its own—or until the animal decides to stop eating or commit „suicide“ in its own way. Animals are not stupid; they sense when the end is near. But we consistently strip them of this final decision.
Why do we trust a living being to be our „best friend,“ yet deny them any competence when it comes to their own death? Often, behind the facade of compassion, there seems to be a much different, far more profane reason…
